Paivi Pajukanta, MD, PhD, Professor, Vice Chair, Department of Human Genetics, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

Paivi Pajukanta, MD, PhD  research group is interested in integrative genomics of complex cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. They have conducted several genome-wide scans and identified DNA sequence variants, genes, and pathways for complex cardiovascular and metabolic traits. I am especially interested in allele-specific transcriptional changes triggered by environmental factors; and genetic studies of admixed Latino populations that have been underrepresented in genomic studies despite their high predisposition to dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease. She have served as a principal investigator in several NIH R01 grants and as a Project Leader of an NIH PPG grant. Dr. Pajukanta has trained multiple undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students; taught graduate level courses; and served as a problem-based learning tutor of medical students. She is also the Director of the Genetics and Genomics Home Area of graduate education at UCLA and the Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Human Genetics at UCLA.
