Ilya Gukovsky, PhD

Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

Dr. Gukovsky's research interest is on signaling mechanisms mediating the inflammatory response in the pancreas. He has found that activarion of the transcription factor NF-kappaB  in pancreatic acinar cells is a key event in triggering the inflammatory response, leading to up-regulation of cytokines, adhesion molecules, and other inflammatory mediators. His studies also established a role for phosphatidylinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), a critical signaling molecule, in pathologic responses of the pancreatic acinar cell. Dr. Gukovsky and his collaborators developed a model of alcoholic chronic pancreatitis that reproduces key responses of this disease and suggests a pathogenic mechanism. His most recent findings unravel pathogenic roles of autophagic and lysososmal dystfunction in pancreatitis.
