George Sachs, PhD

Professor, Vatche and Tamar Manoukian Division of Digestive Diseases, Department of Physiology, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

Dr. Sachs is Director of the Membrane Biology Laboratory at the Veterans Administration Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System.  He is best known for his studies of the biochemistry and biology of H,K,ATPase.  He is currently studying the structure-function and the intracellular assembly of this enzyme.  He also studies the biology of Helicobacter pylori, particularly the mechanisms of gastric survival of Helicobacter pylori, with special reference to the urease generated at high quantities by this organism.  In addition, he has developed methods for isolation of viable gastric and intestinal enterochromaffin cells and has characterized receptors and intracellular mechanisms responsible for release of histamine from the gastric subtype.
