Fola May, MD, PhD, MPhil

Dr. May is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in Digestive Diseases at UCLA and a staff gastroenterologist in the Veterans Affairs. Her main research interests are in colorectal cancer screening, colorectal cancer prevention, and ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic disparities in colorectal cancer screening and outcomes. Dr. May has conducted a number of qualitative and cross-sectional studies investigating contributors to underutilization of colorectal cancer screening in the United States. She is also involved in several prevention-focused intervention studies to improve the delivery and quality of colon cancer screening to veterans and other underserved populations.

In addition to her domestic research in cancer prevention/control and disparities, Fola is also a member of the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center (JCCC), an Assistant Director for the UCLA STAR program, and a co-director for the UCLA Center for World Health Global Health Education Program. She earned her undergraduate degree from Yale University and a Masters in Epidemiology from the University of Cambridge before attending medical school at Harvard. Dr. May trained in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and in gastroenterology at UCLA, where she completed the STAR fellowship and a PhD in public health.
